South Africa Community Call: How civil society can support the government to deliver on the Zondo Commission’s recommendations on procurement

Organisation: Open Contracting Partnership. Location: Virtual 11 AM SAST

When Judge Zondo released Part I of the State Capture report from the Zondo Commission this January, the link between public procurement and corruption was starkly highlighted. The report provided a series of observations and recommendations on the need to reform public procurement, and specifically noted the importance of transparency. The report stated that the “involvement of civil society organizations and commentators is a significant but under-utilized control mechanism in dealing with corruption”.

We want to reflect on the report’s recommendations and strategize how best South African civil society can effectively act as that “control mechanism”.

Join us in our first ever South Africa community call to hear from colleagues in South Africa and from the Open Contracting Partnership as we explore the roles of civil society, journalists, and other oversight actors in ensuring that public money is spent effectively. We will explore opportunities for collaboration with the government, key areas for change, and next steps in creating a strong open contracting ecosystem.

We’re keen to foster connections and support efforts to collaborate with each other and with the government to implement the Zondo Commission’s reforms, and to create a fairer, more transparent and efficient public procurement system in South Africa.
